Have you ever heard the the saying "you can tell all about a girl from the purse she carries"?? I am not sure I believe this phrase. Maybe if the phrase says " you can tell all about a girl from what's inside her purse". Maybe then you'd find out more about me then just outward appearances.
I have struggled for many years with outer appearance. When I was little, at the age of seven, I was diagnosed with a rare disorder called legg-Perthes which is very uncommon for girls, and seen in very active children. I experienced many surgeries, body casts and crutches all throughout my childhood. (And you might laugh knowing I even spray painted my crutches hot pink because silver was just so lame.)
I have struggled with the way people judge me from the outer. To this day I still walk with a very small limp. I usually get asked if I hurt my ankle, or if I need a band-aid for a blister.
As I have become an adult I have learned that God never tends to hurt us or make life difficult but rather to change our lives in a more glorious way. My childhood self was so angry for disturbing the all-star athlete I was becoming. (ok, not really all-star ) Today I look at how God has shaped and changed me from the inside. I might not be able to physically climb mountains, but I can use my gifts and soft heart to bless others.
Last week my dear friend Jenna gifted me one of her amazing handmade clutches. The outer fabric is full of bright colors which I hope I live life as. When I opened the inside and saw black polka dots I was reminded once again: you don't know what's inside until you take time to look. Jenna customized every single detail. I carry this clutch with me everywhere. It holds exactly what I need. Perfect for my everyday attire. I don't usually carry a big purse/bag around unless I am caring craft supplies.
Daily I am reminded that life isn't about caring around a big fancy overstuffed purse. It's about caring what we can handle and using the rest to bless those around us.
